There is a wonderful Japanese
mega supermarket right across the Hudson River from New York City.
Mitsuwa, located in Edgewater New Jersey, has an oversized market
and food court. There is also an adjacent mini mall that sells all
kinds of Japanese goods.
On a recent visit with some Japanese
friends, I was introduced to the delicious tastes and sights of
freshly baked Japanese red bean cakes in the shape of fish and green
tea served in lovely Japanese teacups. There are many tables where
you can sit and large windows that offer an amazing view of the
Hudson River and New York City.
The store had many different items
but apparently their prices on some things can be very high. My
Japanese friends advised against buying rice here—too expensive,
they said.
When I told my kids about the store
they begged me to take them. They wanted to get some of the snack
foods their Japanese friends had shared with them at lunch. This
market has a big variety of snacks aimed at kids. Some of the packaging
is very colorful and fun. One package had chocolate pieces in the
form of dinosaur bones. It looks like you can actually assemble
them like a puzzle.

Candies made of milk are very popular.
While the lettering is mostly in Japanese characters, if you examine
the labels carefully you can usually find something written in English.
If not, the pictures do a good job of helping you figure out what
kind of candy is in the package.

It is easy for any New Yorker to make
a trip to Mitsuwa. The store has its own shuttle bus to and
from the Port Authority in Manhattan. The adult fare is only $2.00
one-way. For a bus schedule and a list of their other locations
see their website at www.mitsuwa.com-

Your last paragraph saves my stampin' girls and us time to figure out how to get there.
How fun!
