As with most major cities, a wide
variety of historical, cultural, adventurous, and entertaining venues
are present in Atlanta. From relaxing activities to exciting activities,
Atlanta has so much to do that you won't know where to begin. A
look at a few of the more popular spots to spend at least part of
the day follows.
If high adventure is in your blood,
venture over to the Summit Skyride, located in Stone Mountain
Park. This cable car ride offers spectacular views of the surrounding
countryside in addition to Stone Mountain. Allow at least 30 minutes
from start to finish for this exciting ride, offered daily as long
as the weather permits.
Located at Robert E. Lee Boulevard
and Marina Drive, Riverboat Cruises offers a 30-minute cruise
of the lake aboard a 150-passenger riverboat. The cruise is available
daily. Check for the actual starting times since this varies according
to the season or day of the week.
For a small fee, tours of the top
of the mountain are also available during favorable seasons. Additionally,
a 5-mile hike and a 1.3-mile hike are offered on well-maintained
trails. Three acres of this mountain have been carved into the likenesses,
illuminated nightly, of three important men from the Civil War-
General Robert E. Lee, General Stonewall Jackson, and Jefferson
Davis, the Confederate President.
Situated at 800 Cherokee Avenue, Zoo
Atlanta is home to an enormous reptile collection, a huge exhibit
of lowland gorillas, a variety of birds, and numerous other species
of animals. Parking is free and picnic sites are available. The
park is open daily with the exception of Thanksgiving Day and December
25.
"Six Flags Over Georgia"
is located west of Atlanta in Austell. It features over 100 exciting
rides, including 10 roller coasters. The amusement park is open
daily and is spread out on more than 100 acres. Skull Island
features water adventures while Bugs Bunny World is full of fun
adventures for the little ones. Musical shows, diving shows, picnic
facilities, and kennel accommodations are all part of the amusement
park's fun.
Visitors to Atlanta who enjoy cultural
things will want to visit the Atlanta Botanical Gardens or
the High Museum of Art. The High Museum of Art showcases
sculpture, paintings, decorative artwork, and photographs by many
of the world's artists. The museum encompasses four buildings, offers
guided tours, and is open year round. The Atlanta Botanical Gardens,
situated on 30 acres, includes a conservatory, vine arbor, shade
garden, greenhouses, a Japanese rose garden, interactive children's
garden, and numerous fountains and statues. A walking trail meanders
through 15 acres of forest.
No matter what time of year you arrive
or what you decide to do, Atlanta is exciting. Check with your travel
agent for a list of other exciting things to do while you are there.-
