It
is Oct 20, 2006 and my original oil-fired steam boiler (on left)
has just been replaced with a brand new Weil-McLain oil fired steam
system with a tankless water heater.
The
cost of the system was $4,600 and that included removing the original.
I received one other quote from 'Gem Plumbing & Heating' (the
company with the phone number song: 867-5309. Probably one of the
largest) for $5,600 which did not include the removal of the old
one. That was an additional $800, bringing the total to $6,400 for
the installation of a new Burnham oil fired steam boiler with the
tankless hot water system. I didn't like the pushiness of the salesman,
who spent all of 5 minutes looking at my system before trying to
close the deal. I said, I would think about it and off he went.
Fortunately,
I learned someone on my bowling team was just starting his own heating/cooling
business. He has been in the business for 20 years, so I figured
he knew his stuff. Him and his partner came and spent some time
explaining options and what the install would entail. They gave
me a quote for $4,600 for a new burner, with a tankless water heater.
I decided to go with him.
First
off, the heating people had their heater removal guys come over
and take out the old one. It took them about 1-2 hours, and then
it was gone. They also carried the new one (which was delivered
earlier that day) down to the basement. So far, so good.
The
next day, the 2 heater guys, Ed and his partner, came over in the
morning, and were done by the mid afternoon. I liked the fact that
they kept my old water heater in the loop, by installing a t-valve,
in case anything ever went wrong with the heater, Ii would still
have hot water.
I gave
them a check and off they were. Upon, using the heater, I noticed
an oily smell emanating from some of the radiators. I called Ed
and they said that was some leftover oil from cutting and threading
the steel pipe. He came over the next day, top-drained the burner,
and the smell was gone. I also, upon Ed's inquiry, checked and tightened
the fittings on my radiators. All's
well now!
C&D
Heating did the work. I highly recommend them.
UPDATE: a mild first half of the winter combined
with a new heater has resulted in us using only 400 gallons of heating
oil so far this winter, and that includes all the free hot water
we can use.
I cannot find contact info for C&D Heating.
Please help.
