Adding curtains to a window is a great way to enhance a room or adjust lighting. The most important part of a curtain is what's holding it up, and installing curtain rods are the first step to making window treatments look great.

A few basic items you will need in order to install curtain rods are brackets, curtains, a drill and a level for measuring, and of course, a tape measure and something to mark with, preferable a pencil. Most curtain rods come with appropriate brackets that can be purchased in the store, so be sure to find the proper size rod before installation. Decide whether or not you want to install the rod on the wall or within the window casing, and be sure to use anchors if the rod will be attached to drywall as opposed to wood window frames or studs found in the walls.

* Hold the rod in the desired location on the window or wall and use a level to determine if the rod is straight. Place the curtain rod brackets about three to six inches from the edge of the window, depending on how you like it and where the desired curtains will hang. Use a pencil to mark a location for the brackets on the wall, as well as mark the location for the holes.
* Drill shallow holes on the pencil marks that can assist in starting the screw or anchors into the wall. This can be done with a nail, a screw or by tapping the curtain rod bracket screw with a hammer. Not too far! Attach the screws and or anchors through the bracket into the wall or window casing. Most often, the screws are also included within the curtain rod assembly, but if not, be sure to check the size before installation to save time.

If you have a larger window and the rod may be more than 48 inches long, a center bracket is a good idea to help support the weight of both the rod and curtains. Also be sure to find a proper rod for the style curtains you are selecting. Heavy curtains need a sturdier rod than typical aluminum styles. Use wall fasteners or wall anchors also if the weight of the rod and curtains puts too much stress on the wall and screws.

Hanging a great set of curtains can be accomplished in a rather short period of time, but the most important thing to remember is to take your time. This is not a job you want to rush through!
