Reflection of Light

The image formed by a plane mirror is a classic example of reflection of light. There are basically two types of reflection, namely regular reflection and irregular reflection. During regular reflection, light is reflected in one direction and it only occurs on smooth surfaces such as mirror. For irregular reflection, it occurs on rough surfaces like wall, paper and cloth. This causes the light to be reflected different direction. There are basically two laws of reflection.

  • First Law of Reflection - The incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal all lie on the same plane.
  • Second Law of Reflection - The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.

Some of the important application of plane mirror

  • It is used during for optical testing by optician.
  • It is used to make periscope
  • It is fitted at blind corner to enhance road safety
  • It is also used for manufacturing of optical instrument like telescope, projector etc.
