Cleaning Fish - Catfish are easier to skin if worked on while fresh. A table or bench, running water and a sharp knife help make the job easier. The method of cleaning varies with catfish and how it is to be cooked. Consult a good cook book on how to cook fish.

How to Skin a Catfish - You can dip catfish in hot water for a few seconds to loosen the skin but not nessasary. Cut through the skin all the way around the head. The head can be nailed to a board or held with another pair of pliers as the skin is pulled off. Pull skin back with pliers. Cut through the backbone behind the dorsal fin on an angle toward the head. Break the head downward from the body, thus removing the head and entrails at the same time.
