An article on the side effects of Gabapentin (Neurontin) might seem a bit odd on a site generally geared towards home-living but seeing as my sister occasionally takes this drug for migraines, I figured I would ask her whether she has side effects and if so, how she is managing.
I also did some research by asking my doctor all that he knew of the drug. I also went to the Mayo Clinic web site as well
Gabapentin is most commonly used to treat some types of seizure disorders associated with epilepsy as well as post-surgical peripheral pain disorder. Other less common uses include treating migraines, restless leg syndrome as well as anxiety & depression disorders.
Treating migraines with anti-seizure drugs is not uncommon as is using beta-blockers and anti-depressants.
My sister gets migraines a few times a month, has tried many drugs and has settled on gabapentin. The side effects she reports are as follows:
- mild sleepiness- 20% of the time
- nausea, stomah upset- 10% of the time
All in all, not too bad of an experience for her. Some of the other reported side effects listed from the Mayo Clinic web site include:
More common
- Blurred or double vision
- Cold or flu-like symptoms
- Delusions
- Dementia
- Drowsiness
- Hoarseness
- Lack or loss of strength
- Lower back or side pain
- Swelling of hands, feet, or lower legs
- Trembling or shaking
Less common
- Black, tarry stools
- Chills
- Chest pain
- Cough
- Depression, irritability, or other mood or mental changes
- Fever
- Loss of memory
- Pain or swelling in arms or legs
- Painful or difficult urination
- Shortness of breath
- Sore throat
- Sores, ulcers, or white spots on lips or in mouth
- Swollen glands

When compared to many other drugs, the side effects for gabapentin are quite manageable.
