Who can resist the sweet and heady
scent of the blossoms of a lilac? This flowering bush, which can
be seen in well-groomed parks, on university campus grounds, and
in the yards of gardeners, shows its colors in lavender, purple,
pink, or white. These springtime flowers are synonymous with love
at first bloom - white lilacs are symbols of innocence, purple lilacs
mean "first love." Lilac bushes like slightly alkaline
soil. Leave unpruned during the flowering season - pruning reduces
the amount of flowers the lilac bush will produce. If it is necessary
to prune the lilac's foliage, do so after flowering.
Lilacs, unfortunately, are capable
of developing what is called "powdery mildew disease."
This disease requires immediate treatment with fungicide, and badly
affected branches may have to be trimmed away. While the flowers
of lilacs are edible for humans, mice and voles also love lilacs.
These pests will nibble on the stems and roots of a lilac bush,
especially when other food is scarce.
