Daffodils are also known as Narcissus
and may be called jonquils in North America. Narcissus is named
for a beautiful Greek youth who fell in love with his own reflection
and spurned a maiden named Echo. Daffodils symbolize springtime
and are a favorite flower for Easter with their early blooms and
traditionally sunny yellow petals.
Daffodil bulbs should be planted in
autumn in areas that will receive full sun or partial shade. Make
sure the soil will drain adequately, as the bulbs should not sit
for long in too-moist soil. After the daffodils bloom in the springtime,
allow the leaves to die and decompose naturally, as this will return
essential nutrition to the soil surrounding the daffodil bulb and
ensure beautiful flowers the following year.
Daffodils, especially when in bloom,
make wonderful gifts. However, their bulbs, planted in a ceramic
container or in a basket, will also brighten someone's day with
the expectation of watching these springtime flowers grow and bloom.
Cut daffodils are especially pretty arranged in a clear or white
glass vase and make great Easter-time centerpieces for the dinner
table or beautiful touches for guest bedrooms.
