Teachers, parents and other people in positions to give advice typically tell us that learning a second language is good for us. Being bilingual can help land a better job, improve your self esteem, et cetera.
But, really, who cares about all that? What’s in it for you? Why should you invest a year or more of your life in this? Here are some of the best reasons to learn a second language – whether you’re nine or ninety-nine years old:
- Keep your mind sharp. Learning new tasks and concepts keeps your mind agile. Learning a new language will require a bit of effort, so you’re doing quite a bit for your brain when you take up this endeavor.
- Enlarge your circle of friends. You just might live in a part of the world where multiple languages are common. Being able to speak fluently in a second language gives you the chance to make friends with a whole new group of people. Some just might end up being your very best friends.
- Make travel easier. If you want to go to Europe when you graduate from college, learning one of the languages spoken there makes communication much easier. You’ll be much less likely to embarrass yourself or send the wrong messages if you’re fluent in a language that’s commonly spoken on that continent.
- Expand your entertainment horizons. Books, movies, video games, albums, et cetera are produced in many languages. Being able to speak and/or read one of your favorite second languages will give you a whole new world to explore.
- Land a good job. Some employers want you to speak a specific language in addition to your native tongue. However, some are content to know that you’ve made the effort to learn any second language.
- Graduate college. Many degree programs require that you complete foreign-language classes. If you can’t pull this off, you don’t get your degree. Don’t waste years of education by not learning the language.
These are just a few of the best reasons to learn a second language. Once you begin picking up whatever language you’ve chosen, you’ll find even more reasons to continue. Keep working and practicing and you’ll master the second language. Then, if you’re feeling motivated, you can try for a third.
