Dermabrasion can give your skin a new look:|
Dermabrasion is a relatively simple procedure meant to improve skin
appearance by removing imperfections like acne marks, wrinkles,
discolorations, etc. Dermabrasion abrades the top layer of the skin
using wire brushes and other devices.
Facial skin is one of the biggest factors impacting appearance.
Wrinkles and other imperfections on the skin often result in feelings
of self consciousness and lowered self esteem. Dermabrasion can
help improve looks and overcome some of these issues.
Dermabrasion was originally used for treating unsightly scars that
result from acne. Today, it is being used to treat many different
skin conditions including serious ones like rhinophyma, which affects
the nose.
This cosmetic procedure does not usually cure the problem. For instance,
although dermabrasion can remove wrinkles, it cannot prevent new
wrinkles from forming. What it does do is improve appearance by
softening the edges of scar marks and other skin blemishes.
During the procedure, the doctor uses a handheld device that rotates
at a high speed - typically 18,000 to 35,000 rpm. The rotating surface
that comes in contact with the skin has serrated wheels, wire brushes
or diamond fraises.
Wire brushes are made of wires attached to a rotating wheel at multiple
angles. This is very effective at improving the appearance of deep
scars. Diamond fraises are wheels made of stainless steel with rough
diamonds embedded onto the surface. A diamond fraise is often used
to create a softer appearance after a wire brush has been applied.
The abrasive device combined with the pressure exerted by the doctor
will plane the skin surface rapidly, taking off the top layer of
the skin. The patient is given medication to numb the area; hence
she feels no pain. Once the effect of the medication wears off,
the patient may feel a burning or itching sensation.
The whole procedure may take just a few minutes to about an hour,
depending on the problem being treated. It is done as an outpatient
procedure. Sometimes it may be necessary to come in for additional
treatments.
Treated areas are covered with dressing to help the healing process.
One of the commonly used dressings is a water-rich material. This
dressing is changed every day for about five or six days. Then the
treated skin is left uncovered to complete the healing.
The patient is usually given pain-reliever medication after dermabrasion.
The doctor may also prescribe antibiotics and medication to minimize
swelling. Patients must avoid exposure to the sun till the healing
is complete.
After dermabrasion, the face may remain swollen. This, along with
the pain, is temporary and will go away within a few days. The procedure
affects the ability of the skin to manufacture new pigment. Hence
it may be difficult to get a tan after going through dermabrasion.
The success of this procedure is depends on the skill of the doctor.
If too much pressure is applied, it can damage the skin and there
may be a permanent change in skin color. Wounded skin may develop
scars as a result of dermabrasion. For these reasons, it is important
to choose a doctor who has sufficient experience with the procedure.
The patient can normally expect dermabrasion to result in skin that
looks significantly better than it was before. There may be some
residual scars or other abnormalities left, although most patients
are happy with the results even then.
