Correct a receding chin with cosmetic chin surgery:
A well formed chin is an essential part of one's facial appearance.
If the chin is either 'weak' or too prominent, it can detract from
the facial profile. Cosmetic chin surgery can usually correct both
conditions.
The medical term for cosmetic chin surgery is mentoplasty. Good
facial appearance is about the right balance. Often, surgeons who
do rhinoplasty (nose surgery) will suggest a mentoplasty to go along
with it so that the face can achieve a well-proportioned look.
Mentoplasty is a relatively simple procedure. If the patient has
a receding chin, the surgeon will correct it by placing an implant
in the chin. If the chin is too prominent, he will achieve balance
by removing some of the bone.
To correct a receding chin, the doctor will start by making careful
measurements of the chin and face to ensure that the implant used
is exactly the right size and shape. During the procedure, he will
make a small incision along the crease line beneath the chin. An
alternative is to make an incision inside the patient's mouth along
the line where the lower lip meets the gum.
He will then stretch the skin and insert the implant. The implant
is made of synthetic material and has a feel quite similar to that
of human tissue. The implant is chosen based on accurate measurements
of the amount of augmentation required given the patient's facial
dimensions. Synthetic implants are available in a wide range of
sizes and shapes.
The surgeon then closes the incision with sutures. The scar line
under the chin is usually not easily visible. If the incision is
made inside the mouth, it will not be seen at all.
The other type of cosmetic chin surgery is done to reduce prominence
of the chin in cases where it juts out too much. As with the above
procedure, incisions are made either under the chin or within the
mouth. The surgeon then removes excess bone to give a well-proportioned
look to the face.
Following the surgery, the area will be covered in a dressing. This
will usually remain in place for two to four days. The area operated
upon will feel tender and somewhat uncomfortable. The skin and tissues
feel tight and stretched after the procedure. This abnormal feeling
can last for about a week. The doctor may prescribe medication to
reduce the pain and discomfort.
The chin may also be swollen for while; this can take about six
weeks to subside. For the first few days following cosmetic chin
surgery, the patient must minimize chewing. Food intake will be
restricted to liquids and soft foods. Most normal activities can
be resumed within about ten days, although the patient should refrain
from vigorous activities for several weeks.
As with most other kinds of elective surgeries, the patient must
have good overall health and an absence of major diseases to qualify
for cosmetic chin surgery.
Since this is a cosmetic procedure, insurance companies will usually
not cover the costs. The patient must finance the surgery out of
his own or borrowed funds.
Cosmetic chin surgery can have a major impact on a person's appearance
because the chin is a key element of the facial profile. The feelings
of satisfaction and increased self confidence that result from successful
mentoplasty may well make it worth the effort.
