If you have a broadband connection
and you're still making your phone calls through a traditional telecommunications
provider, it's time to consider switching to Voice Over IP (VoIP).
All you need to get started are:
-
A VoIP provider, which is like
your traditional telecommunications provider but provides a
service that allows you to send and receive phone calls over
your broadband internet connection. Most providers offer a range
of plans with varying features and costs. A quick internet search
for providers in your area will show you lots of options. Try
forums and review sites to find out which providers people are
having positive experiences with.
-
A VoIP box, which will work with
your existing modem to handle incoming calls and route outgoing
calls over the internet. Most providers sell VoIP boxes pre-configured
to work with their systems.
And here are five good reasons to
make the change:
-
The best thing about VoIP is
the cost savings. Most providers offer untimed long distance
calls for a very small fee (I pay 10 cents per call, untimed,
anywhere in the country). In addition, most providers offer
free calls between other users with the same provider - that's
right, free calls!
-
You can use your existing telephones
and keep your existing phone number, so it's really easy to
get set up. Look for a VoIP box that enables you to receive
incoming calls from your standard phone line and allows you
to plug in your standard telephones.
-
Call quality is now excellent.
When it was first introduced, VoIP was plagued by drop-outs
and voice distortion. With bandwidth increases and technology
improvements these problems have largely been resolved. Indeed,
when making VoIP to VoIP calls, the quality is now often better
than that on a standard phone call.
-
Contrary to popular opinion,
your computer does NOT have to be turned on to use VoIP. Just
make sure your modem and VoIP box are switched on all the time
and the VoIP box will do the rest.
-
Most providers allow you to have
DID numbers (sometimes at additional cost) in another location.
Do you want a number in another city on which friends, family
or customers can contact you for the cost of a local call? Set
up a DID in that location and they will dial a local number
and their call will be routed to you over the internet.
So stop paying too much for your calls,
and investigate VoIP today!
