All About the New .tel

A new domain extension has arrived and is set to take the internet by storm. It's .tel.
A domain extension is the part of the domain (the suffix) that's just after the period like .com, .net, .tv. There are roughly 280 suffixes total with new ones being created monthly, or so it seems.

All of these extensions, except for .tel offer nothing new in terms of usability. tennisballs.dz offers nothing that tennisballs.net has. I could make a site and place on any of these extensions and it would look and act the same. Most every country there own extension- Germany has .de; Great Britain has .uk; we, here in America, even have .us (although its popularity is marginal). These domain extensions are very popular in their own countries with .de even surpassing the mighty .com in Germany.

So, now another extension has been added to the ever expanding pool: .tel.
Do we really need another one? Is there anything this extension offers that any of the others don't?

Here are some answers to common questions about .tel's

What is a .tel?
A .tel is a domain suffix created with mobile internet devices like cell phones and Blackberries in mind.
.tel is all about publishing contact data: phone numbers, SIP addresses and so on directly in the DNS, not on html-based web sites which means you don't have to create a web site or pay for hosting. It is template driven with few modifications allowed. Here is an example of a .tel in action: Cranston RI

Why another extension? Don't we have enough?
This extension is designed mainly for wireless connection devices like mobile phones, blackberries, the iphone and many others. It is lightweight, designed for small screens, and it is a repository for persona, business, city info. It is the "white and yellow pages" of the internet. For example, you're in your car in Cranston and want to call your daughter at Cranston High East, but you forgot the darn number. You could open up a browser and search for it in google. That would work after a bit of clicking and browsing. Then you could write the number down , then call it. But if you want to save time s go to cranston.tel and click thru to the page, see the number and click it. It's set up to auto dial the number. Very handy and time saving.

What about .mobi?
.mobi was created for entire web site viewing on mobile phones. Type in a .mobi web site in your cell phone's and if it's set up correctly it will fit nicely on your screen without having to be zoomed in.
.tel is for mobile hardware as well, however there is no design involved. It's for entering contact info. No bells and whistles, no blogging, no logos; just a uniformly, rather bland appearance which allows it to load quickly on mobile phones, etc..

All the contact info I need is already on the web
Sure it is. If you search long enough, you can find the email address for the "Statue of Liberty". But who has the time and patience in this day and age to spend searching. With a .tel one can easily locate an email address or a myspace address for an acquaintance by only knowing there .tel. .tel allows a person to place all their contact info in one central location and so, everyone else would only have to know your .tel address.

I have an address book already with everyone's info in it
Well, how many of us have dealt with dead contact numbers. Just remember your friend's, the companies you deal with and your home city's .tel and you would need to store very few contacts.

I don't want all of my contact info available for public viewing
What's nice about .tel is you can privatize any contact info by only allowing those you have granted access to view it. It's simple and free for everyone.

How much is registration?
.tel's are $8.95 a year at name.com and go up from there. They all offer the same backend for modifying your domain as this was provided by the .tel creator-telnic.org so one registrar has little advantage over the other. Moniker might be the most secure in terms of safeguarding your domain if you're really worried about that.

Godaddy doesn't yet offer .tel's. Not sure why. They make their money hosting, and since .tel's need no hosting they might not see it as a moneymaker.

The key to mass success is simplicity. And .tel is very easy to use.

It has the advantages of:

  1. a need for every person
  2. large accessibility
  3. ease of use
  4. low cost
  5. centralized management
  6. security better than average
  7. it's unique in nature ( not similar to .mobi etc)

I like it
I think that .tel will be a big success. unlike other top level domain .tel is for contact info with the ability to forward your visitors to your communications or website.

I don’t know about anyone else but I can be contacted in about 10 different ways, mobile, skype, home phone, home, work address etc. I don’t want all that on my business or social cards. Plus, once I give out my .tel they can always reach me and you get to decide who sees what info; private or public.

I could lose my mobile in the morning and have my new phone number on my .tel in moments.
