Washing Machine
If your washer won't stop filling up with water and overflows the tub, check for one of these problems:

1) Turn off the electricity to the washer. If the water *stopped* filling when power was disconnected, the problem would usually be in the control system of the machine. If the water still continues, then the plunger in the water valve is either stuck open or slow to close. Try turning the water faucets off an on a few times. This small joltmight unstick the water valve. If not, it will need replacing.

2) There could be a problem with the water level switch. Call in a repairman.

3) There is a pressure switch hose that is attached to an air dome. This switch tells the washer that there is water in the tub and allows the agitator to start.
- Remove the control panel and you will notice a small hose. See if it popped off of the air dome. If it did, secure it with a zip tie.

If water flow continues, but drains out immediately, then raise the drain hose above the highest water level line of the tub. Do not seal the drain hose to the discharge pipe. This could cause a siphoning action.

Quick Fix
I read this tip and had my boyfriend check the hose. It wasn't blocked but it was pinched by the backing of the machine. We opened up the top backing, slid the hose over and it was fixed. That easy, Thanks!

Washer Finally Stops Filling, Goes To Agitate Mode
Great!!!!! advice. I just took off the front panel of my GE washer and observed that the transparent tube going to the tub from the water level switch was completely plugged up with brown gunk. I used a piece of wire and Q-tip to clean the end of the tube and then I blew air into the tube on the water level switch side to clear any lose debris . Now the washer works like a dream. As Tony the tiger says, "I feel great!!!" I saved myself some money and it was all accomplished in about 15 minutes.

Wow, Thanks
Had the same problem that everyone that commented above had. The washing machine tub kept overflowing and only worked every once in a while. Opened the knob panel and the front panel infront of the tub, located the clear hose, disconnected on both ends and blew into the top end and some gunk came out of the bottom end of the hose. Then I cleaned the inside with a thin stick with a piece of napkin rolled on it, removing what ever gunk was left inside. Now my washing machine works like a charm. Quick and easy fix. This webpage saved me time, money, and frustration. Thanks a million!

Yep, it was the air hose. It was pinched between the frame and the back panel. There is an opening in the frame for all the wiring and that hose to go down the back of the washer, but the hose wasn't over with all the wiring, it had just been placed along the back and then when they put the back, back on, they pinched that hose. I just scooted it over to the opening with all the wiring and...voila!! my washer is working properly now!!! Woooohooo, I am so glad!!

Tip #3 just saved me a bunch of money. Two screws in the front and lifted the control panel up. I could see the hose was not attached. Reconnected it and zip tied it. Thank you very much!!!!!!!

Sweet!
Uh...this was an awesome tip! Would have never been able to solve this problem on my own. Simply unscrewed the panel, saw the tube was firmly attached so took it off and blew hard to clear up an apparent obstruction. Worked great after that. And just an fyi for anyone who might be searching a similar problem as I had, my initial problem was that nothing was working right on my washer, it appeared to be some sort of control board problem. I'd push start and the 1st light would come on for a few seconds, go off and then down to the next light and so on. I couldn't find anything at all on the initial problem, I think it was too general to search for. When I put it on just a rinse cycle I realized the fill wasn't stopping so I searched for a solution to that problem and came here. It seems the control board issue was actually just the over-filling problem that messed up the whole process.

Great tip! Thanks, much appreciated!

Here's another easy fix. If you're machine is filling much more slowly than it used to, turn off the water, unplug the machine, and unscrew the two black hoses where they attach to the washer. Inside each protuberance is a small filter. Trust me. They're there. With a small pair of needle nose pliers, pull out the filters, clean them with an old toothbrush and replace them. Voila! Prepare for Niagra Falls in your washing machine!

My goodness, I cannot believe this worked. I was looking at used washers on Craigs list thinking it is cheaper than having a repairman come out. Was a bit tricky to get to the hose, but took apart things I could and saw it. Traced it to the side of the drum and boom, it was off. Put it back and it works. You saved me $$$$$$$ aqt xmas time. You are a lifesaver

I check the hose once, but I didn't check for airflow. Rechecked after reading your page. Blew through the hose and it was almost totally plugged. Swapped with a hose from my old washer and it works. Thanks
P.S already bought a Solenoid thinking that was the problem. At least that won't go bad for a while.
