EElectric Water Heater Repair
More than likely, the thermostat is set too high. Optimal temperature is 130 degrees. This temperature works well, both for inhibiting bacterial growth and in reducing scalding injuries, especially to small children.

Dishwashers do like a higher temperature; 140 degree+, but they usually preheat the water to desired temperature, anyway. If your dishwasher doesn't preheat, then you'll have to go to at least a 140 degrees on your heater.

Electric water heaters usually have either two panels screwed to the top and bottom of the tank or one panel along the side of the tank. The thermostat is located under these panels. TURN OFF THE POWER., remove the plate, using a screwdriver, adjust accordingly.

For an accurate hot water temperature reading, first run the water for a few minutes, then use a thermometer to check the temperature. If it's not 130 degrees, adjust accordingly, wait 24 hours for heater to adjust, then recheck temperature.

If the temperature of the water refuses to budge:i.e. adjusting thermostat has no effect on water temperature, then there is a problem with the thermostat . Make sure the thermostat is butted right up against the tank.

Remember to turn off your water heater when going on vacation to save energy.

Can someone tell me how to replace a thermostat on my electric water heater? The water has suddenly gone SCALDING Hot and I've read that it could be the thermostat.

All of a sudden our water temperature for the hot water has gone up (dangerously high). We have not adjusted the thermostat, ie there is no reason for this sudden increase in water temp. Can you tell me why this would have happened? Thank You.
